  • IMPORTANT: Please follow precisely the definitions below for the various types of service.

The total sea service cannot be higher than the days you've been signed on.

    • ACTUAL DAYS AT SEA is time spent at sea, which may include time at anchor or river and canal transits associated with a passage, underway with the main propelling machinery in full use for at least 4h within a 24h period.

    • ANCHOR TIME: Actual sea service may include time at anchor or river and canal transits associated with a passage like a short period at anchor whilst waiting for a berth or to transit a canal or lock or other exceptional situations like harsh weather conditions or other adversities, where the depart is postponed to a later moment. This may be counted as Actual sea service but on no occasion may a period at anchor, on a buoy or mooring, exceed that of the previous voyage. On the contrary, if the period at anchor, on a buoy or mooring is at the conclusion of a passage (i.e. the vessel goes to anchor rather than to a berth) then time will be counted as Stand-by service or Onboard service. So, if the boat drops anchor

    • STAND-BY SERVICE (cannot EXCEED DAYS AT SEA) is time immediately following a voyage while the vessel is under preparation for a subsequent voyage. A maximum of 14 consecutive days may be counted at one time, but on no occasion may a period of Standby service exceed that of the previous voyage.

    • SHIPYARD SERVICE is time when standing by a build, refit or serious repair. Maximum 90 days per application will be taken into account for OOW 3000 (totalling from all testimonials). Regular maintenance is not to be counted as shipyard but as onboard service.

    • WATCHKEEPING SERVICE (for OOW 3000 holders or higher CoC only!) is actual sea service spent as a watchkeeping officer in full charge of a navigational watch for not less than 4 out of every 24 hours while the vessel is engaged on voyage.

    • ONBOARD SERVICE / YACHT SERVICE: is the time spent signed on a yacht, irrespective of the vessel activity, which includes also all the above.

If you have any doubts, feel free to contact us srb@pya.org

  • The above service consists of:

  • Your Actual days at Sea exceed the number of days you've been signed on!

    Please amend.

  • Your Stand-by service exceeds the number of days of actual sea service.

This is not allowed! Please amend.

  • The figures you have provided for your 'actual days at sea', 'standby service' and 'shipyard service' are equal to the total time you have been signed on the vessel!

USUALLY, the number for the total sea time and the total time signed on should not match as normally there would be days which do not fall into the category of actual days at sea, standby or shipyard e.g. days off, etc.

Before you submit this information, please make sure that what you have written is correct in accordance with the sea service definitions listed above.

  • The sum of your Actual Days at Sea, Stand-by Service and Shipyard Service exceeds the days you have been signed on the vessel!

    Please amend.

  • Watchkeeping days cannot exceed Actual days at Sea!

    Please amend.

Watchkeeping days are calculated on a cumulative basis:

Prior to 09/04/15: 8 hours = 1 day of watchkeeping

    From 09/04/15: 4 hours = 1 day of watchkeeping

More than 8 or 4 hours watchkeeping respectively in a 24 hour day does not constitute 2 watchkeeping days!

  • We cannot verify watchkeeping unless you are in possession of an OOW 3000 COC.

(For those applying for an Unlimited ticket, you will have to provide a stand-alone testimonial in Merchant format - template available in MCA MSN 1856 - and a letter from your Captain stating that he/she has been shadowing you while on watch).

  • Leave of Absence and/or Rotation

  • IMPORTANT: If you do not specify any leave days, the MCA may automatically deduct a minimum of 30 days, or more, off your time on board for periods longer than a calendar year. If you have been on rotation, please specify your program or the periods you were not on board.

  • The total of days of leave + total days of sea service exceeds the days you have been signed on!

This is not possible as you cannot be working on board whilst also on leave.

    Please amend.

  • Official Signature

  • IMPORTANT: (MSN 1856 4.4 p. 10) 'Testimonials must be signed by the Master of the vessel in which the qualifying service has been performed. In the case of service as Master, the testimonials must be signed by the owner or a responsible person from the Yacht Management Company such as a company director or yacht manager. The only exception to this is a clear hierarchical relationship between two Masters e.g. Fleet Master, can sign off for masters of smaller vessels in the fleet.
