  • About Your Sea Service

  • Onboard Yacht Service

    IMPORTANT: Your dates of service on this testimonial cannot overlap with dates of service from another testimonial (for this or another vessel), or you would be accounting for the same days twice.

  • Your Actual days at Sea exceed the number of days you've been signed on!

    Please amend.

  • IMPORTANT: Please follow precisely the definitions below for the various types of service.

    The sea service totals cannot be higher than the total days signed on.

    • ACTUAL SEA SERVICE: must be performed on yachts underway with the main propelling machinery in full use. Actual seagoing service must be in the engine department onboard yachts. A minimum of 4 hours of working duty in 24 hours would count as 1 full day of actual service.

    • YARD SERVICE: is shipyard service where the vessel is alongside in water, at drydock (the vessel is out of the water on blocks), or at a ship service facility (or workshop facility) out of operation where any of the following are undertaken:

      • Overhaul, major service, or survey works are carried out on the main engines;
      • Overhaul, major service, or survey works are carried out on the auxiliary engines;
      • Overhaul, major service, or survey works are carried out on auxiliary equipment to include (but not limited to):
      o steering gears;
      o pumps;
      o power distribution systems;
      o gearbox;
      o shafts and propulsors;
      o fire fighting systems and equipment;
      o hull fittings;
      o and side valves;
      • Survey and inspection of service tanks, fuel/fresh water, and its systems;
      • Work carried out in workshops on any of the above equipment;
      • Installation of new systems on board working with contractors.

      If you are claiming more than 90 days of shipyard service, you should provide evidence regarding all the above maintenance or major repair work/survey on the main or auxiliary systems. The work carried out should contain full details of the completed tasks. The report must be verified and signed off by the Chief Engineer, Master or a Company authorised person.

      Please note that the MCA might take out any shipyard time higher than the 90 days (per application) limitation from the total onboard service (when they feel that the definition has not been correctly applied).

    • SEAGOING WATCHKEEPING SERVICE (or UMS duties): is defined as time spent on an engine room watch, for a minimum of 4 hours out of every 24 hours whilst the main propulsion machinery is in operation. For this reason, can never be higher than the actual seagoing service. This duty can be performed in a subsidiary capacity if you are applying for an SV Second Engineer Certificate of Competency; or need to be in FULL CHARGE of the entire watch or performing UMS duties if you are applying for an SV Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency. The MCA recognises it only if you've already entered the SV Program.

    • ADDITIONAL WATCHKEEPING SERVICE: Time spent as a watchkeeping officer while the vessel is at anchor or made fast to the shore providing the vessel is using its own power (vessel's auxiliary power generation), and other related auxiliary machinery is running. Safe Engine Room Watchkeeping must be maintained during these periods.
    • Dynamic Positioning (DP): is generally considered as onboard service only but it depends on the configuration of the vessel. If you can provide satisfactory evidence to the MCA that the main engines are in use and if the engine and propelling machinery used for DP are sufficient, this could be considered as actual seagoing service instead.

      We are not allowed to evaluate DP therefore you will need to contact the MCA at engineering@mcga.gov.uk and provide all the necessary documentation.

    • Alongside: When the yacht is alongside, if the yacht is on shore power, that time doesn’t count as actual sea service because the yacht needs to be at sea and in transit, therefore this is onboard service. While, if the yacht is on ship’s power, then tis time can count as Additional Watchkeeping.

    If you have any doubts, feel free to contact us srb@pya.org

  • The above service consists of:

  • The figures you have provided for your Actual days at sea and Shipyard service are equal to the total time you have been signed on the vessel.

    USUALLY, the number for the total sea time and the total time signed on should not match as normally there would be days which do not fall into the category of actual days at sea or shipyard e.g. standby days, days off, etc.

    Before you submit this information, please make sure that what you have written is correct in accordance with the sea service definitions listed above.

  • The sum of your Actual Days at Sea and Shipyard Service exceeds the days you have been signed on the vessel!

    Please amend.

  • Seagoing Watchkeeping days cannot exceed Actual days at Sea!

    Please amend.

    Watchkeeping days are calculated on a cumulative basis:

    Prior to 09/04/15: 8 hours = 1 day of watchkeeping

    From 09/04/15: 4 hours = 1 day of watchkeeping

    More than 8 or 4 hours watchkeeping respectively in a 24 hour day does not constitute 2 watchkeeping days!

  • Leave of Absence and/or Rotation

  • IMPORTANT: If you do not specify any leave days, the MCA may automatically deduct a minimum of 30 days, or more, off your time on board for periods longer than a calendar year. If you have been on rotation, please specify your program or the periods you were not on board.

  • The total of days of leave + days of sea service exceeds the days you have been signed on!

    This is not possible as you cannot be working on board whilst also on leave.

    Please amend.
