  • When working with nervous and fearful dogs and especially dogs that are not comfortable with strangers or visitors, I always recommend working remotely with a suitably qualified professional rather than in person, to begin with at the very least, because the presence of a stranger causes your dog to immediately feel anxious and stressed, which is an emotional state that does not enable them to learn anything effectively.

When a dog does not feel safe or is anxious and stressed, they will find it difficult to concentrate, they may react to the person or shut down (making it look like they're coping when they're not, and then they react out of nowhere)  Neither of these outcomes are beneficial when looking to help your dog feel more comfortable in situations that currently upset them.

In order to help a dog be less fearful or reactive, it is essential that all their experiences relative to 'triggers' are positive ones (as much as possible).

By working remotely with your qualified professional, they will be able to establish with you straight away a clear plan of how to set your dog up in the best way possible and support them throughout their training program, meaning it is likely to be more successful.

I ONLY work remotely with clients, as the majority of the dogs I work with are not comfortable with strangers, so I know that this way of working can be highly effective in the majority of cases.
