The concept of Viking Valley
The town is called “NJARDARHEIMR” (which means “the home dedicated to, or given by, the Norse God Njord”) Viking Valley as a concept is a historical, living and working Viking settlement, where the Viking age and the exciting history will be brought to life. Members of the public will be able to interact and step back in time to experience and feel the Viking age for themselves. Viking Valley will become an educational park dedicated to forging memories through learning and interacting with the inhabitants of the Viking town. It will all be in accordance with archaeological evidence and obviously in a fun and entertaining way. You hear and forget, you see and remember, when you take part you will understand (Chinese proverb).
About the Viking town
The Viking town has now reached the final of level one, witch include 18 buildings. When level three is completed in a couple of years, it will in total consist of close to 30 buildings, including a 110x30 feet party hall, a Viking shopping centre, workshops, guest house and a high stavechurch-like seremony building. The carvings and decorations is based on traditional Viking styles like Borre, Urnes, Jelling and Oseberg. The houses are built with previous experience in reconstructing Viking era buildings as reference. The ironworks like hinges on doors and locks is forged by a blacksmith with life long experience in historic blacksmithing. We use traditional authentic paint, based on oxblood and tar for the embellishments. We have utilized material found in the fjord district and used sod (roofs), slates (floors) and wood tiles (roofs), like that used on the stave church roofs. It is our ambition to maintain a Viking settlement of high quality for learning and enjoyment.
The owner of Njardarheimr
Gudvangen Utvikling AS (GUAS) is a local owned developing company that was made to create activities and work in a sustainable way, respecting our history and unique nature and the profit will be used to continue expanding. The owners already manage individual local companies with an annual turnover of 150 mill Nkr. which should prove the professionality of the organization.
Gudvangen is a busy tourist place with approx. a million visitors every year. It was important to us to create activities that fitted in naturally and didn’t compete with the natural beauty of the place. And, one important matter to us; unlike most tourist activities, we are child friendly!
