  • What is John Watson’s Trust?

John Watson’s Trust is a small Edinburgh-based charity that awards grants for educational purposes to children and young people under the age of 21 who have a physical or learning disability or who are socially disadvantaged. John Watson’s Trust is a charity registered in Scotland under charity number SC014004.

Where does John Watson’s Trust operate?

At present, we serve applicants based in Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian or West Lothian. If you are applying from outside these areas, please note that owing to current funding conditions your application is unlikely to be successful. Applications from outwith Scotland are ineligible. We are unable to grant every application we receive, as we receive more applications that we have funds to fulfil, but we help wherever we can.

John Watson’s Trust and School Trips

John Watson’s Trust can offer schools collaborative funding towards the cost of residential school trips, usually assumed to be within Scotland.

    ·         Our funds are intended to assist specific young people identified by the school whose presence on trips is threatened by low income or other form of disadvantage: we do not fund to lower the cost of a trip to the whole group

    ·         We expect that our funds will be a supplement to fundraising activities that involve the young people themselves, with such fundraising seen as a fundamental part of the trip experience

    ·         We ask that our funds be supplemented wherever possible by the use of PEF funding, Parent-Teacher organisational funding and school reserves.

    ·         Our funding will usually take the form of a specific sum per pupil assisted.

    Who is this form for?

This form is to be used for schools and organisations who are planning residential trips within Scotland or the UK for young people. Parents or carers of individual young people who seek funding for school trips should use the form for Individuals and Families.

     When should you apply?

John Watson’s Trust has five application deadlines per calendar year. These are available on the Trust website at www.wssociety.co.uk/charities/jwt. Your application must be received by the last deadline prior to the trip’s date of departure in order to be eligible and ideally we would receive it prior to an earlier deadline up to six months in advance of the trip.
