Co-operative Housing in Brighton & Hove (CHIBAH) is a network of housing co-operatives dedicated to representing, supporting and developing co-operative housing in the city. We have decided to run this survey to make sure we are meeting the needs of new and existing housing co-ops in the city.

We currently have nine member co-operatives with around 200 people between them. The current members of CHIBAH are: Bug, Brightside, Bunker, Rosa Bridge, Sea City, South Downs Eco, Starlings, Sussex Cohousing and Two Piers. We are run by our members and decisions are made through monthly meetings.

Collectively we work to:
- Raise awareness about housing co-operatives and advocate for them across the city, including with Brighton & Hove City Council.
- Assist new housing co-operatives in setting up, using the experience of our members.
- Act as an on-going network of support for housing co-operatives and their members.
- Organise training for housing co-operative members and share our learning, such as organisational finance and group development.
- Offer funding and support to participate in local, regional, and international co-operative movements, policy making and events.
- Represent co-operative housing via the steering group of the newly formed Community-Led Housing Programme for Brighton & Hove, helping new housing co-ops set up, working with Brighton & Hove Community-Land Trust (BHCLT) and Mutual Aid in Sussex (MAIS).
CHIBAH also works with representative bodies on the local and national scene, principally the Confederation of Co-operative Housing and Community Works.

We are 16 years old this year and want to make sure we are still heading in the right direction - please fill in this survey to help us with that.
1) Which housing co-operative are you a member of?
2) Is your co-operative a member of CHIBAH? If so, does a representative of your co-op attend the monthly meetings or AGM?
3) If your co-operative is a CHIBAH member but members do not attend CHIBAH meetings, what do you think is stopping your co-op from being more involved?
4) If your co-operative is not a member of CHIBAH: What, in your opinion, are the barriers (if any) which keep your co-operative from joining CHIBAH?
5) Is your co-operative a member of any other co-operative or housing networks? e.g. Confederation of Co-operative or Radical Routes? If so, which ones?
6) From your knowledge of CHIBAH, what would you say were the network's strengths and weaknesses?
7) Does your co-operative have any challenges which could be reduced through further training or learning from members of other housing co-ops? If so, what are they?
8) Do you have useful skills and experiences you could share with existing co-ops or use to help groups set up new ones? If so, what are they and would you be interested in sharing them through CHIBAH? (There are currently many groups who want to set up new housing co-ops in Brighton & Hove)

How to join CHIBAH?

If your co-op would like to join CHIBAH, please email us at at info@chibah.org. To get involved, simply turn up at a meeting, the dates will be announced via the CHIBAH mailing list. There are membership fees as follows: £7.50 per housed member and £4.50 per unhoused member. If your co-op houses members already, you will not be charged for unhoused members. When you join you will be added to the mailing list, and invited to join the CHIBAH Dropbox.

Upcoming meeting

We will be having a social to get to know each other and discuss the survey results on Saturday 16 June, 2pm in the Gazebo in Christchurch, Two Piers Housing Co-op. Please come along! If you are going to come, please send an email to mail@chibah.org letting us know you'll be coming for instructions on how to get there.
