Banksman training ensures that an organisation meets its legal requirements and reduces the risk of costly accidents when carrying out common, but dangerous, reversing manoeuvres.
This qualification aims to raise awareness of the dangers caused when large vehicles reverse. It introduces practical techniques and hand signals to assist drivers with this manoeuvre.
It is essential that the same system of hand signals is used throughout the workplace or organisation. New recruits/joiners may have used a different code and therefore may need training on the system used in their new workplace.
While the operation is taking place, the signaller should be positioned so that he or she has a clear view of all the manoeuvres without being at risk, eg of being struck by the vehicle.
The signaller should only be responsible for signalling and any measures necessary for protecting people during the operation. He or she should not be distracted by having to perform other tasks.
