  • 5 Day RYA Sail Cruising Joining & Check-In Info:


    1). If you're due to arrive for your booked space(s) on the RYA Sail Cruising Week & Training Course, it will start at 1830hrs on the Sunday at Largs Yacht Haven, KA30 8EZ, on the date shown on your booking confirmation e-mail. Booking confirmation e-mails have a booking reference number, e.g. ABCD-123456. Confirmed bookings will show a green 'PAID' icon in the top-right hand corner.


    2). Check-In time for this course opens at 1830hrs.   The office will be in use up until exactly this time for other courses, debriefing and VHF Radio Licence exams.


    3). ScotSail office is in the Main courtyard, to the right hand side of The Bosuns’ Table restaurant and conservatory.


    4). If you’re GOING TO BE LATE don't worry - later arrivals are common due to travel factors so if this applies to you please TEXT your name and ETA on the day to the duty Instructor ( STEPHEN: 07990518726 ) however the office will by default leave later arrival instructions for you at the centre office door, along with berth and gate number, and your RYA Instructors' name & telephone number.


    5). If you're driving there is free secure parking for the duration - please go to the barrier at the car park, press intercom and let them know your name and that your with ScotSail and they'll let you through.   There is no need to go into Marina Reception after parking.


    You can leave your gear in the car as you will be going down that way again after check in.


    6). PLEASE remember to have checked out all your RYA course details AND important related info, FAQs, what to bring inc clothes and sufficient spending money for shared costs such as marinas and meals ashore, links to info, alcohol policy, dietary information, voluntary student fund guidelines and pre course recommended experience in your booking email, as well as on the website, RYA website AND in your booking emails, and all of the joining info and FAQs at www.scotsail.co.uk/help :

    For Competent Crew no prior knowledge or experience is required, and for Day Skipper it's recommended to have 5 days' seatime, 100 miles, 4 nights hours and expected shorebased navigation ability to Day Skipper Shorebased or higher.  For Day Skipper please see: https://www.rya.org.uk/courses-training/courses/sail-cruising/Pages/day-skipper.aspx and our Day Skipper Pre-Course Experience Video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIh9t9TypYs

    Courses will be run according to RYA Specifications and at a ratio of not more than 5 students to 1 instructor, with a max of 5 students per Cruising Yacht.


    7). It’s a good idea to have eaten prior to check-in, and there are restaurants in the marina also. The Bosuns Table next door offers 10% off main meals ordered up until 1800hrs to all ScotSail customers showing their booking date & confirmation number.


    8). It's really important that you read and understand all of this before arriving to help you get the best from your experience - if you have any dietary requirements or allergies please ensure you let us know prior to arrival.


    9). It's possible to hire T5000 Offshore Breathable Sailing Waterproofs at the centre on arrival, of you feel you would benefit from this.   It's £3/day per garment, every size XXS-XXXL is available and there is no need to pre-book and all proceeds go back into buying / updating gear for the following season.


    10). If you have any outstanding balance payments due they must be paid right away - balances are due 28 days prior to your start-date.


    11). Anyone needing to do their VHF Radio assessment following the short online course can do this from 1645hrs on the Friday of return - please advise your skipper that you wish to do this or book it now using the options within this online support system.

This course is a high level commercial skippering prep course for a RYA/MCA Certificate of Competence that will allow you to take on significant responsibilities in a commercial context: you are expected to take a very high level of personal responsibility in terms of preparedness, pre-attendance research and self-study in advance of your attendance.  It is strongly advised that you do not leave the forms, course materials and the reading thoroughly all of the printed and email materials and associated links to 'the last minute'.

     


    Remember, for the RYA/MCA Exam you need a First Aid and VHF Licence. To add a Commercial Endorsement you also need a ML5 Medical, Sea Survival and PPR Course.

    Full Version:

    1). You can login at www.ryainteractive.org with your username(s) and password(s) after you've completed your booking / online payment. You will be prompted to fill out a few details and then access the online course - it's compatible with PC/Mac systems, and some tablets and mobile devices.

    Once you've completed your booking / online payment it may take up to 24hrs while for your login to become active and enrolled, so if you attempt to login immediately it may not yet be active.

Once you’ve completed the online course and have downloaded the online pass certificate, you should arrange to come in to the training centre to do the short final practical assessment / exam. If you haven't completed the VHF Course under our RYA Training Centre, you will need to obtain your form / sticker from them to bring with you to our test centre.

    If you're attending a practical sail / power training course or boating event with us, you can do the exam after the final day of your practical course, or during one of the evenings. Please speak to your RYA Course Instructor at check-in and tell them you'd like to do this so they can ensure the arrangements were made for you - BUT you MUST remember to STILL request a date/time first at https://www.scotsail.co.uk/mobile/request-vhf-radio-exam.php

    If you don't do this above procedure, you won't be able to sit your VHF Assessment!

    6). The exam is straightforward, practical and fun and consists of a short multi-choice written paper, and a practical scenario-based session using training VHF Radio Equipment. You will be led through the process by an independent RYA/MCA SRC Assessor who was not previously involved in your training or online support.

    7). Once you’ve arranged your exam/assessment at the centre, please visit:

    to pay the RYA/MCA exam and licence fee direct to them, and print off your unique application form.

    8). The separate £70.00 Photo-I.D. Licence fee is payable direct to the UK's RYA/MCA department on their own website, for the full photo I.D. Licence and Exam, and is different from the online course fee charged by the RYA Training Centre for online course access, ebook, Instructor support, Examiner booking service and the use of their licensed training radio and classroom facilities to enable the conduct of your exam.

    9). You will need 1 x passport sized photograph with your name and date-of-birth written on the reverse side. Please bring this with you to the centre along with the unique application form you will have been given by the RYA website - there are also wireless printing facilities at the centre for mobile devices.

    10). To recap then, you need to have:

    i). completed the online course

    ii). have your online pass certificate & number

    iii). applied and paid for the exam(s) on the RYA website; and

    iv). booked your VHF Exam slot on our website, and had that slot positively confirmed by an Examiner.
