Thank you for your interest in applying to ‘Step Up’ (a division of ‘Step by Step’) for the upcoming Winter camp.
We have now successfully run 11 winter camps and 3 summer camps (after taking over Camp Horizon) and Boruch Hashem they have all been very successful.
Before submitting your application, we would like to make you aware of a few points ensuring you appreciate your role at a ‘Step Up’ residential stay and understand what is expected of you during your stay at camp.
Our primary concern is that the children are kept SAFE at all times. We appreciate that you would want to give the child in your care the best time possible, however SAFETY always comes first.
‘Step Up’ is all about the children-we are here for the children. Our primary goal is that every minute of every child’s time at ‘Step Up’ is maximized for their enjoyment and comfort, supporting the children to continue to help them reach their potential.
At ‘Step Up’ we work extremely hard to also ensure that all our staff have a great time too, enabling them to fully care for our kids to the best of their ability in any role. Looking after the special children can be very demanding and exhausting - our goal is to give the children a most special camp experience and the carers must make that possible.
All applicants must be aware that caring for disabled children is a huge responsibility, especially so during an extended period of time. A special needs child will be entrusted in your care and the responsibility is yours to ensure that they are well cared for and kept safe during the whole duration of their stay.
You will be the replacement parent and full-time caregiver; in some cases, you will have to wake, dress, feed, toilet, entertain, clean, shower and comfort your camper throughout the day – and sometimes throughout the night, possibly surviving on very little sleep. At ‘Step Up’ your needs must be secondary to the needs of your camper.
This requires a level of maturity and the ability to get up on time and involve yourself in all camp activities.
We appreciate that the children are given 1:1 care, but at our camp it is imperative that everyone takes responsibility as part of a team. So, although every carer is allotted a child, ‘Step Up’ is one organization and we expect our carers to care about the other children and the space around as though it was their family, ensuring the smooth running of the whole camp.
Please do not put any pressure on parents to request the child that you would like to care for. Please put your preference on the application form and it is the job of the ‘Step Up’ team to determine if you are best suited to that child. We only want to do what is in their best interest.
Please find the application form attached.
We look forward to hearing from you,
