INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCE / first round 2018
25 October – 14 November 2018 / Plovdiv, Bulgaria
to artists from the Tandem Universe (including all Tandem countries and Tandem programs)
Despite the antidemocratic and extreme right-wing tendencies, we cannot deny a resurgence of the commoning in Europe: solidarity kitchens, cooperatives, shared community gardens, peer-to-peer transportation, alternative currencies, squatting and refurbishing of buildings for community purposes, free digital platforms for exchange of knowledge and services and many, many more.
How do we create a sense of “commonhood” in a city and support the growth of civil initiatives? How do we generate civil confidence to take hold of our shared resources – natural and cultural? How can we expand and upscale the different commoning practices and values in a Bulgarian city?
Ideas Factory invites socially-engaged artists, researchers and explorers who
* take the topic of the commons passionately and want to explore its different aspects in Bulgaria and are ready to offer their experience and methodologies to find solutions to local problems – for the city and the region of Plovdiv/Bulgaria.
* have a multidisciplinary knowledge and approach to social reality and a strong impulse to contribute to social causes and the topic of democratic uphold of the commons
* appreciate and respect the diversity of local cultural specificities and see themselves as current social or cultural entrepreneurs (or ones in progress) and art, play and participative methodologies are crucial instrument for you.
The residence will offer an inspiration for artistic explorations, human and professional exchanges and a test field for creation of a dialogue among different disciplines/groups/layers in the local communities which through artistic intervention can contribute to shape the daily reality of the city and its future approach and policy towards the topic of commons.
FIELDS OF EXPLORATION
Does citizens’ ability to detect what should be maintained as a common resource has languished? What could we do to facilitate better understanding and urge to get more involved into those processes, thus generating an authentic sense of community belonging?
Artists in residence will have the opportunity to challenge their multidisciplinary viewpoint on the unknown territory of Plovdiv – a European capital of culture for 2019. From the broad topic of the democratic and participative uphold of the commons they can pick one (or few) more concrete areas and explore their full spectrum on-field:
* natural resources
* cultural life and the access to it
* public services
* knowledge and education / social media
* urban spaces and buildings
LOCATION AND CONTEXT
Plovdiv is the second biggest city in Bulgaria and a European capital of culture for 2019. It has many-layered cultural heritage and flourishing industrial life at the moment. It's one of the oldest cities in the world that has been inhabited for around 8000 years.
The crucial importance of the topic of the commons in the region of Plovdiv can be reasoned mainly in two directions: on one hand, it is for the first time that a Bulgarian city hosts such a responsible title like ECOC based on recognition of its cultural heritage and history as well as its concentration of culturally and socially active agents of change. But on other hand, the uphold of the cultural processes has been quite turbulent in the recent years and the civil involvement - lower. This is mostly visible in the utilization of spaces like the central square, the Old town, the neighborhood of creative industries "Kapana" and other buildings of cultural significance; in the disappearance of events rich in meaning and content from the cultural calendar of the city etc.
Since the cultural life is the litmus which can show whether a civil society can and wishes to be involved in the development of a city, our residency will revolve around this issue mainly, but in case of interest and different needs of the residents in the local context, they can focus on a relevant and similar topic.
Further details and more specifics info on the local context and the connection with the topic will be provided only to the short-listed candidates.

Ideas Factory is a platform that unites active people in the country and abroad, who create threads of connection at places where they are scarce – among generations, among disciplines, between the city and the village, between citizens and municipal authorities, between “center” and “periphery “. By building bridges of interaction there, where they are destroyed, we believe, that we are creating alternatives for a world that’s getting more radicalized, more isolated in “the bubbles of the single truth”, by substituting the fear with familiarization, with exploration, with the creation of new solutions. The Factory does that through various formats for creative interaction, from which quite specific solutions, which we support from the beginning to their realization, are born. Our initiatives Baba Residence, the Social Innovation Challenge and EMPATHEAST are our manifest for change that we need now: connection among disciplines, generations, ideas that make up the world such as we would live in: curious, nonjudgmental, creative.
The Plovdiv 2019 Foundation is the organization that prepared the application of Plovdiv for the title European Capital of Culture 2019 and is handling the implementation of the project. “Together” is more than a path to a more integrated community, it is our vision for making culture more accessible so that it can make our lives more meaningful, our city more vibrant and attractive.
We search for the crossing points between different social groups, in order to rethink the stereotypes and find out how we can benefit from our differences.
We transform forgotten urban spaces, as well as peoples’ mindsets, in order to make Plovdiv a better place to live in and a more attractive tourist destination.
We turn past into future, also through new technologies, in order to create a bridge between eras, generations and cultural and archeological layers.
TANDEM FOR CULTURE
Tandem is a cultural collaboration program that strengthens civil society in Europe and neighboring regions. Tandem offers a space to build real, meaningful and sustainable relationships that can grow through shared artistic interests, enthusiasm for creative discovery and the joy of making things happen together.
We believe these experiences can contribute to increasing empathy, breaking stereotypes and shaping a common language.
Our vision is to see networks of creative communities emerge from this programme, and support the impact of their ongoing efforts.
