Entries are now being accepted for Radio Warrington’s annual writing competition and this year it is a special ‘Christmas & New Year’ themed short story & poetry competition.

Emotions often run high during the festive period with people looking back on years gone by, thinking about new beginnings, holding family get-togethers, remembering loved ones, etc., and we hope this will inspire the local writing community to engage with the competition for the chance to win some super prizes.

A winner and runner-up will be selected for each category. As well as receiving the prizes indicated below, our winners will have their work published widely in the local press and on social media and be given the opportunity to perform their stories and/or poems live on Radio Warrington.

SHORT STORY CATEGORY

First Prize: £50 courtesy of Warrington Arts Council and a £50 drinks voucher to spend at the Grand Cocktail Bar, Bridge Street, Warrington.

Second Prize: A £20 Book Voucher courtesy of Waterstones Warrington.

POETRY CATEGORY

First Prize: £50 courtesy of Radio Warrington and a family ticket to see Dick Whittington at the Parr Hall on Saturday 7th January 2023 courtesy of Culture Warrington.

Entries are restricted to one entry per person per category (e.g. you can enter one short story & one poem). Please clearly mark any upoaded files with your name. 

Rules, terms and conditions:

• All submissions must be your own original work.

• Max. 1 entry per person per category (e.g. you can enter 1 short story & 1 one poem).

• Short stories must not exceed 2,000 words and poems must not exceed 500 words.

• Work already published on online forums, club or enthusiast sites can be entered provided you have not been paid for its publication and it has not won a prize.

• The deadline for entries is midnight on Sunday 27th Nov 2022. Work received after this date will not qualify for entry. Please allow good time if submitting entries by post.

• Winners will be chosen by the competition’s judging panel and will be announced on Radio Warrington’s Culture Show in December 2022.

• The copyright for each short story and poem will remain with the author but entrants agree that by submitting their work they are happy for their names and poems to be read out on air by Radio Warrington at any time during and after the competition and for their name and work to be published on social media, on the website allthingswarrington.net and in the local press.

• The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

• Submitted poems will not be returned.
